Wetsuits Versus Drysuits for Scuba Diving

Most people who are new to scuba diving often wonder which is the best diving suit to purchase. Both types are actually quite good and are highly recommended but they work well for different climatic conditions. If you are scuba diving in an extremely cold area, then you need to opt for the dry suit. A wetsuit will be the best option for you if you will be scuba diving in warm waters.

Both the wetsuits and dry suits are used for thermal insulation, water temperatures and winter air insulation so as to prevent illnesses such as hypothermia, which can lead to death. They are used by fans of inland surfing sports all year round for sports such as Whitewater stand-up paddle boarding. Both suits are used to protect divers from the cold and ensure that they are comfortable as they study marine life. The main differences between the suits lie in their materials and intended purpose. Discussed in this article are the main differences between a dry suit and a wetsuit and the conditions in which each one of them would be the best option.

The first suit we are going to look at is the dry suit. Dry suits are warmer than wetsuits and they are therefore recommended for extremely cold climates. Dry suits are preferred for cold waters because they are thin and loose fitting so you can be able to wear other clothes underneath them. Neoprene and membrane are the two materials used in the making of dry suits because they are completely waterproof. A dry suit will only be effective in keeping the cold out if you have undergarments on. Dry suits are a bit more difficult to use than wetsuits because they trap air that could cause buoyancy. For effective use, you will need to take a special course so you can learn how to manage the buoyancy in the suit.

The other type of diving suit is the wetsuit. If you are diver in cool or warm waters, then a wetsuit is the best choice for you. Wetsuits are unlike dry suits in that they are fitted tightly on one's body. Wetsuits are made from neoprene and the thickness of the material is wholly dependent on the kind of waters you intend to dive in. Wetsuits protect you from the cold by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the suit when you get into the water. The water will then be warmed by your body thereby ensuring that your body temperature is regulated. Wetsuits are best during the summer whereas dry suits are best for the winter.
